Professor Sir John P Arbuthnott

Sir John Arbuthnott

Professor Sir John P Arbuthnott (BSc, PhD, ScD, FRCPath, FIBiol, FmedSci, FRSE) joined the Foundation's Board of Trustees in April 2009 and is a member of the Foundation's Investment Committee and Development Group. He is a microbiologist of 40 years standing. He has held University teaching positions at the Universities of Glasgow, Trinity College Dublin and Nottingham and has been Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He has Honorary Degrees from several national and international Universities.

In public life, he has been responsible for a new formula for allocation of health resources for the NHS in Scotland "Fair Shares for All", served on the Richmond Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food, was Chair of Scottish Food Advisory Committee and a Board Member of the Food Standards Agency. He has been Chairman of Greater Glasgow NHS Board and was Chair of the Arbuthnott Commission, which considered the consequences of having four separate voting systems for elections in Scotland and also different boundaries for Holyrood and Westminster constituencies. He is currently Head of a Review of the 8 local authorities of the Clyde Valley Partnership examining the potential for shared services.
