Salary Costs Award Case Study

In 2008 The Yard was awarded £10,948 to help pay for the salary of the Chief Executive. This brings the total it has been awarded by the Foundation to over £82,000. The Yard is a specially adapted adventure play centre in Edinburgh which provides disabled children with a safe and accessible place to play with support from trained staff and carers. It runs free family sessions three times a week, sessions for 13 special schools, three youth clubs for young people with learning difficulties, a pre school playgroup for children with autism and an outreach summer service for disabled children and their siblings in the holidays.

Maureen Patterson, Chairperson, said: “For many of the children we work with The Yard is the only place they can really let of steam. Having somewhere safe to play really lets them grow and also lets their families relax as they know the children are safe. The Foundation has part-funded the salary of the Chief Executive for the last two years. It’s hard to over-estimate the difference this has made to the organisation. Having stability for such a key post means we can deliver plans with continuity. That’s great for the staff, and most importantly for the youngsters and their families to whom we provide a service. We’ve made great changes over the last few years and are planning even more developments in the future.”

Derek Cummings, Director, said: “Over 1,300 people use our centre every week. It’s a place where there is space for people of all ages to meet and really engage in community activities. This three year award provides us with much needed security to allow us to continue supporting the local community. We’ve had funding through the standard grant scheme since 2002, and the funding has helped us to grow and deliver services that really meet the needs of local people.”

Research Awards Case Study

The Foundation also funds research. In 2008 The Royal Society of Edinburgh was awarded £197,700 to fund continuing research into the ageing population, with the aim of improving quality of life.

Sir Michael Atiyah, President of The Royal Society of Edinburgh, said: “The research work being carried out with this money is likely to have a very real impact on the quality of lives of our ageing population. It will enable more of Scotland’s brightest researchers to explore a wide range of issues affecting older people, with the expertise of the Society being used as effectively as possible in providing public service in Scotland. By working in partnership with Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland, we are seeking to help address problems and find solutions to issues of concern for Scotland's ageing population.”
