June 2008: Edition 2

“With June already upon us and while the sun is (hopefully) shining it's worth reflecting on the Foundation’s year so far. We’re just about to make our third round of awards this year, with early June marking the half way point in the six lots of awards we’ll make in 2008. We’ve also just passed our fourth deadline of the year for our standard grant scheme, and the one deadline of the year for our overseas awards. Our other award programmes, the Partnership Drugs Initiative and Capacity Building, are also delivering against their usual schedules.

Another important milestone in our calendar is the Annual Forum, which took place at the end of April. As always it was great to see so many familiar faces there, and to have the opportunity to find out first hand what is most important to the sector at the moment. Along with my colleagues, I continue to be deeply impressed by the commitment there is to delivering high quality, thoughtful services for the people in our communities who need these the most, and to the strategic view of creating lasting change that is taken by many in the sector.

We look forward to delivering funding through the rest of the year, and to keeping in touch with you through your applications, at our funding surgeries, as part of our assessments and reviews, or because we have some other opportunity to meet up or talk on the phone.”
ANNUAL FORUM 2008
John Swinney addressing the Forum
John Swinney addressing the Forum
We held our Annual Forum on the 24th April at the EICC in Edinburgh this year.

Our forum is designed to help develop a better awareness and understanding of the work of the Foundation.
Our keynote speaker this year was John Swinney MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth.

He shared his thinking on the role of the voluntary sector in Scotland. Speaking passionately about his belief in the sector and the importance of a healthy voluntary sector in Scotland, Mr Swinney went on to answer questions from the audience on a wide range of topics.

He also shared examples of the great benefits the voluntary sector can bring to areas such as working with offenders, bringing value not only to the offenders but effectively reducing the overall costs of service provision though effective targeting of work.

Andrew Muirhead, Chief Executive and Mary Craig, Deputy Chief Executive of the Foundation gave a review of the Foundation's year during 2007. Delegates were then given the opportunity to question our Trustee and Executive panel on our grantmaking work over the last year. The panel comprised of:

Norman Drummond (Chair)
Andrew Muirhead, Chief Executive
Mary Craig, Deputy Chief Executive
Christine Lenihan, Trustee
Presentations from the day will soon be available on the website...

THE REVIEW OF OUR CRITERIA PRIORITIES & PRINCIPLES
We’ve just finished collecting information and opinions as part of the review of our criteria for our standard grant scheme. We carry out this review every three years, and it is a way of making sure we are still focusing our grantmaking on areas of most need. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the criteria review questionnaire and to share their thoughts on what is working and what we might want to change. With over 200 comments received we’ve got plenty to work with and a good cross section of views to consider. Thanks also to everyone who took part in the criteria review workshop at our Annual Forum on 24th April.

At the moment we’re collating all the information and drawing out the themes from it. These will be developed into recommendations which will go to our Board of Trustees later this year, giving us time to make any changes to our current criteria ready for the start of 2009. The new criteria will be in place for 2009 to 2011, setting the direction for our main grantmaking programme.
OVERSEAS PROGRAMME
The deadline for applications to our overseas programme was 14th April. We have received 54 applications, and these are being assessed at the moment before decisions on which charities we will support are made by our Board of Trustees in August. Thanks to everyone who took the time to apply, and as in previous years the range of work being carried out overseas by Scottish based charities is truly inspiring.

You can find out more about the Overseas programme and the charities that we have funded in our annual review and website on the above link.
THINKING OF APPLYING?
